In Memoriam: Dr. George Moll
Dr. George Moll, for many years the only pediatric endocrinologist in Mississippi, died Aug. 13. He was 72.
Moll graduated from the University of Chicago with both an M.D. and a Ph.D. in biochemistry. His pediatric residency was at Mott Children’s Hospital in Michigan, and his pediatric endocrinology fellowship was at Wyler Children’s Hospital in Chicago. At the time of his recruitment to UMMC, Moll was on faculty at Emory University in Atlanta.
The last faculty member recruited by the late Dr. Blair Batson when he chaired UMMC's Department of Pediatrics, Moll taught hundreds of medical students at UMMC and served families throughout the state.
“He was literally on call 24 hours a day for the next 17 years before a second endocrinologist was recruited,” said Dr. Owen B. Evans, who followed Batson as pediatrics chair from 1989-2011. “He rarely vacationed, and when leaving town, he kept in touch with his office to monitor his patients.”
Dr. Mary Taylor, Suzan B. Thames Chair and professor and chair of pediatrics, remembers Moll for his excellence in education as well as his kindness.
“I had the privilege of learning from him as a medical student, and I was blessed to work with him when I returned to Mississippi in 2011 until we celebrated his retirement last year,” Taylor said. “Dr. Moll made a difference in the lives of so many. He will always be a special part of the pediatrics family and his legacy will always be alive here at Children’s of Mississippi.”
Said Dr. John Gaudet of Hattiesburg, president of the Mississippi Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, “Physicians of his caliber are what makes Mississippi a special place. He will be dearly remembered and greatly missed.”
Moll is survived by his wife, Susie, and daughters Dr. Teresa Moll and Dr. Tina Moll.
